Tafsir of Al-Furqan 25:65

"And those who say, 'Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is gharama.'"

"And those who say" — whether following their prayers or generally at all times — "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is gharama," meaning permanent and inseparable, as extracted by al-Tustari from Ibn Abbas. He (may Allah be pleased with him) cited in this regard the words of Bishr ibn Abi Hatim:

And the day of al-Nisar and the day of al-Jifar were a torment, and it was 'gharama' (inseparable).

Similar to this is the saying of al-A’sha:

If He punishes, it is inseparable; and if He gives, He gives abundantly, for He does not mind.

This inseparability is either specifically for the disbelievers, or the intended meaning is duration, as in the persistence of a creditor. In another narration from him, it is interpreted as heinous and severe, while others have interpreted it as destructive. In the account of their saying this, there is additional praise for them, demonstrating that despite their good conduct toward creation and their diligence in the worship of the Truth, they fear the punishment and beseech their Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, to avert it from them, placing no reliance upon their own deeds. This is like the saying of the Almighty: "And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord." In this is the verification of their faith in the Resurrection and the Requital. The apparent meaning is that the phrase "Indeed, its punishment..." is part of the speech of those praying, serving as a justification for their aforementioned petition based on the wretched state of that punishment, as is also His saying...
