ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ
And I am not one to drive away the believers.
ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ
And I am not one to drive away the believers.
Tafsir
Verse range: 26:114
This is a response to the implication in their words that requested their expulsion and conditioned their faith upon it, as they had made their own following a prerequisite for it. By doing so, they positioned themselves as though they were claiming that he, peace be upon him, was someone who drives away believers and that he was someone who shares in such conduct. Thus, the subject (the pronoun "I") was placed first, and the particle of negation was emphasized to convey that such conduct is not his affair, but rather the affair of those being addressed.
It is permissible that this advancement is for the purpose of strengthening [the negation], which is less complex, as is not hidden. It has been said: They requested of him, peace be upon him, that he drive them away, so he answered them with this, just as the chiefs of Quraysh requested of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he drive away those who had believed in him among the weak, and so the verse was revealed: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord..."
