(And do not touch her with harm) such as striking or ham-stringing (cutting the tendons of the legs), (lest a punishment of a Great Day should seize you).
The Day is described as "Great" due to the magnitude of what descends upon it, and this is more eloquent than describing the punishment as great. Some suggest this is a figurative attribution (majaz al-nisbah), or that 'azim (Great) is an adjective for 'adhab (punishment), and the genitive case (al-jarr) is due to proximity (al-mujawarah), similar to the expression "This is the burrow of a lizard, ruined" (hadha juhru dabbin kharibin). However, this latter view is of no substance.
