Surah Ash-Shu`ara' 26:166

ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ

And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."

"And you leave what your Lord created for you." [The phrase is] for the purpose of your enjoyment. The word "min" (from) in His, the Exalted’s, saying: "from your spouses" is for clarification if what is intended by "ma" (what) is the genus of females. Perhaps, in that case, there are two elided genitives in the speech: i.e., "And you leave the approaching of the private parts of what your Lord created for you." Alternatively, it is for partition if what is intended by "ma" is the permissible organ of the spouses. This is supported by the reading of Ibn Mas’ud: "what your Lord has made fit for you from your spouses." In that case, the estimation of a single genitive suffices, i.e., "And you leave the approaching of what He created."

It is said that the speech contains an allusion to the fact that they also approached their wives through their posterior passages, but [the Prophet] did not explicitly denounce it as he explicitly denounced the approaching of males, because it is lesser in sin—though, according to the well-known view among the Ahl al-Sunnah, it is forbidden, indeed a major sin. It has also been said that it is permissible, and the discussion on that has already passed in detail during the commentary on His, the Exalted’s, saying: "Your wives are a place of cultivation for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish." It is also said that there is no elided genitive in the speech at all, and the intent is to condemn them for abandoning what was created for them and showing no regard for it in any way, let alone approaching it. You know that the meaning is apparent based on the estimation [of the elided words].

"Rather, you are a transgressing people." This is a transitional disjunction (idrab intiqali). The "‘adin" (transgressor) is the one who persists in his oppression and exceeds the limit therein. Its object is elided and is either general or specific; meaning: "Rather, you are a people who are transgressing, exceeding the limit in all acts of disobedience, and this is among them," or "exceeding the limit of desire, to the point that you have surpassed all other people, indeed, most animals."

It is also said: "Transgressing the limit in oppression, as you have oppressed by approaching what was not created for approaching and abandoning the approaching of what it was created for." In al-Bahr, it is stated that beginning the sentence with the address pronoun is for the sake of emphasizing their deed and alerting [the reader] to the fact that they are uniquely identified by it, as if it were said: "Rather, you are a transgressing people, and no one else but you."
