They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."
Tafsir
Verse range: 26:167
"They said, 'If you do not desist, O Lot'"—meaning: from rebuking us and denouncing our affair, or from that which you are upon of claiming messengership, inviting us to belief, and denying what you have denied of our conduct—"you will surely be among those evicted"—meaning: among those banished from our town, as was their custom. It is as if they were in the habit of evicting anyone with whom they were angered for any reason. It is also said: they would evict those who condemned that indecency among them, with violence and harshness; and for this reason, they threatened him, peace be upon him, with this. They turned away from the more concise expression, "We will surely evict you" (lanukhrijannaka), to what was mentioned [the passive form], and the emphasis contained within the speech is not hidden.
