Ash-Shu'ara: (225) Have you not seen that they...

(Have you not seen that they wander aimlessly in every valley?)

This is an attestation that the poets are followed only by those who are astray, and it serves as a confirmation of that. The address is directed to everyone capable of seeing, indicating that their state is so evident and manifest that it is not restricted to the perception of one observer over another. The plural pronoun refers to the poets; that is, have you not seen that the poets wander aimlessly in every valley of idle talk and gossip, in every branch of illusion and imagination, and in every path of error and misguidance? They wander aimlessly upon their faces, not guided toward any specific path among the paths, but rather they are bewildered in the vast deserts of deviation and foolishness, and they are lost in the wilderness of arrogance and impudence. Their habit is the tearing apart of protected reputations, casting aspersions on pure and exalted lineages, composing erotic verses about chaste women, engaging in illicit courtship, and vacillating between the two extremes of excess and negligence in their praise and their satire.
