Ash-Shu'ara: (38) "So the sorcerers were gathered for the appointment..."

(So the sorcerers were gathered) meaning those known [to Pharaoh and the people], given that the definite article here—as stated in al-Miftah—is for reference ('ahdi).

The accomplished scholar said: The reference may also be general and all-encompassing, as is the case here, and there is no contradiction between the two [interpretations] as some might imagine. However, there is room for scrutiny in this, so reflect upon it.

"For the appointment of a known day."

(For the appointment of a known day) meaning the time that was set for it, specifically the hours of a designated day, which was the forenoon (ad-duha) of the Day of Adornment. This is on the basis that al-miqat (the appointment) is an attribute of time. In al-Kashshaf, it is [defined as] that which has been timed, meaning delimited, whether of time or place, and from this are the mawaqit (stations) of Ihram.
