(Pharaoh said to them: "Yes, you shall have that, and you shall, in that case, be among those brought near.")

It is said: He meant by this, "You shall be the first to enter upon me and the last to leave me." As for idhan (then), it is a particle of response and recompense according to what is famously established. Al-Zarkashi narrated in al-Burhan from some of the later scholars that it is here a compound of idha—which is an adverb of past time—and the tanwin, which serves as a substitute for a deleted sentence following it, and it is not the particle that governs the subjunctive mood for the imperfect verb. Al-Kafiji and Judge Taqi al-Din ibn Razin also adopted this view regarding the parallel verse, and I am among those who advocate for establishing this meaning for it. The meaning based on this is: "And you shall, when you prevail—or when you are the victors—be among those brought near." It was also recited as na’im, with a fatha on the nun and a kasra on the ’ayn; this is a dialectal variation of na’am.
