Tafsir of Ash-Shu`ara' 26:50

(They said) — that is, the sorcerers — (No harm) — meaning, no harm shall befall us in what you have mentioned regarding the severing of hands and what accompanies it. Al-dayr (harm) is the verbal noun (masdar) of dara, and its verbal noun also comes as dawran. It is the noun of la, and its predicate is omitted, as such omission is frequent in instances like this.

(Indeed, we are unto our Lord returning) — meaning, the One in whom we have believed. This is a justification for the negation of harm concerning what you do, because death is inevitable due to one cause or another, and the return is to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Whoever does not die by the sword dies by other than it; the causes are various, but death is one. The gist of it is the negation of concern regarding being killed, justified by the fact that death is inevitable. A parallel to this is the saying of Ali, may Allah honor his countenance: "I do not care whether I fall upon death or death falls upon me."

Or, it means: "There is no harm upon us in that, because our destiny and yours is to a Lord who will judge between us and exact retribution for us from you." In the same vein is the saying: "To the Judge of the Day of Judgment we go, and before Allah the disputants shall gather." Some have not favored this interpretation because it entails a disconnection of the pronouns, as the pronouns before and after refer to the sorcerers, and [this interpretation] prevents them from being included in the plural pronoun. So ponder this.
