Surah Ash-Shu`ara' 26:59

ﳘ ﳙ ﳚ ﳛ ﳜ

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

*Kadhalika* (Thus)

It is either in the accusative position, serving as an adjective for an implied verbal noun—that is, "an expulsion like that expulsion, We expelled them"—with the reference being to the source of the verb; or it is in the genitive position, serving as an adjective for a "station"—that is, "a noble station like that station which they once possessed." On both interpretations, the objection that this necessitates equating a thing with itself—as Abu Hayyan claimed—is refuted, for reasons previously established.

Alternatively, it is in the nominative position as the predicate of an omitted subject—that is, "the matter is thus"—intended to affirm and establish the affair. Al-Tayyibi favored this view, stating: "It is the strongest of the interpretations," so that the Exalted’s saying, “And We bequeathed them to the Children of Israel,”—meaning, We gave them ownership through inheritance—becomes a conjunction following it. The two sentences are parenthetical, situated between that which is conjoined—"So We expelled them"—and the conjunction that follows it, which is the Exalted's saying...
