66. Then We drowned the others.

[That is] Pharaoh and his soldiers, by the sea closing in upon them after the departure of Moses, peace be upon him, and those who were with him.

It had a roar. It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that when the Children of Israel departed, they heard the roar of the sea. They asked, "What is this?" Moses, peace be upon him, replied, "Pharaoh and his companions have drowned." So they returned to look, and the sea cast them [the bodies] upon the shore.

The expression of "the others" for Pharaoh and his soldiers is to belittle them. The apparent meaning is that the thumma (then) indicates a delay in time; however, it is perhaps more appropriate to interpret it as a delay in meaning, due to the conceptual distance between the two conjoined parts.
