Tafsir of Ash-Shu`ara' 26:73

(Or do they benefit you) by virtue of your worship of them, (or do they harm you) by your abandonment of their worship? For worship—especially when it is performed with the exaggeration you have described—must necessarily be for the purpose of either attaining a benefit or warding off harm. The object is omitted due to the need for a verse-ending rhyme (faṣilah), and what precedes it indicates it. It has also been said that the meaning is: "or do they harm whoever turns away from their worship, whoever that may be." This, however, is contrary to the apparent meaning necessitated by the conjunction.
