He said, "Disguise for her her throne; we will see whether she will be guided [to truth] or will be of those who is not guided."
Tafsir
Verse range: 27:41
(He said) i.e., Sulayman, peace be upon him. The narration is repeated despite the fact that both what was narrated previously and what follows are from his speech, in order to draw attention to the contrast between the former and the latter. For the first was an expression of gratitude to Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—while the second is a command to his servants.
(Disguise her throne for her) meaning: make it such that it is not recognized, and that can only be achieved by changing it from the form and shape it was in. Perhaps the intent is a change in its general state. It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, and al-Dahhak that this was done by adding to it or removing from it. It was also said: by removing the jewels from it; and it was said: by turning its underside to be its top, and its front to be its back.
The (lam) in "li-ha" (for her) is for specification, as in the phrase "hayta laka" (I am for you). This indicates that she is specifically the one intended for this act of disguising.
(So we may see) is in the jussive mood, as it is the response to the imperative command. Abu Haywah read it in the nominative mood, treating it as a new sentence (isti'naf).
(Whether she will be guided) to recognizing it, or to the appropriate response for the situation. It was also said: to belief in Allah the Almighty and His Messenger, peace be upon him, when she sees her throne brought before her, even though she had left it locked behind doors, guarded by sentries and chamberlains. Al-Tabrisi narrated this from al-Jubba'i, though there is a weakness in it, as the relevance of the disguising to [the purpose of] belief is not apparent.
(Or whether she will be) i.e., in relation to our knowledge, (among those who are not guided) to what was mentioned of recognizing her throne or the appropriate response for the situation. For while the fact that she is among them in reality is a continuous state, her being among them according to Sulayman, peace be upon him, and his people is a new matter that will be made manifest through testing.
