An-Naml: (70) "And do not grieve over them..."

"And do not grieve over them" due to their persistence in disbelief and denial, "and do not be in distress"—that is, in constriction of the chest—"from what they plot", meaning from their plotting, for Allah will protect you from the people.

Ibn Kathir read ḍīq with a kasra on the ḍād, which is also a verbal noun. It is also permissible that it is ḍayaq with an open ḍād, as a simplified form of ḍīq; it has been recited as such, meaning: "Do not be in a constricted affair." Abu Ali disliked this, for the simplified form requires the omission of the qualified noun and the substitution of the adjective in its place, and this is not among the adjectives that consistently take the place of the qualified noun, and there is further scholarly debate regarding this.
