Tafsir of Al-Qasas 28:51

"And We have connected the discourse for them"

The pronoun refers to the people of Makkah. The root of al-tawsil (connecting) is the joining of pieces of rope to one another. The poet says: "So tell the sons of Marwan that my protection is not attained by a weak rope that is constantly being connected."

The meaning is: We have sent down the Qur’an to them, connected, one part following another, as dictated by wisdom; or in succession—promises and warnings, stories, lessons, exhortations, and advice.

It has been said: We have made it into awsal (segments/links), meaning different types: promises, warnings, etc.

It has also been said: The meaning is that We have connected the news of the Hereafter to the news of the worldly life for them, such that it is as if they had witnessed the Hereafter.

According to al-Akhfash, it means "We have completed the discourse for them."

Al-Hasan read it as wasalna (with a light sad), whereas the reading of the majority uses the doubled sad (wassalna) to denote frequency. Based on this, al-Raghib said in interpreting the verse: that is, We have increased the discourse for them, connected one part to another, "so that they might take heed"—and thus believe in what it contains.
