Al-Qasas: (54) These shall be given their reward...

"These"—those described with the aforementioned attributes—"shall be given their reward twice"—once for their belief in their own Scripture and once for their belief in the Quran—"for having been patient"—meaning, for their patience and steadfastness in holding to both faiths, or for their belief in the Quran both before and after its revelation, or for their patience regarding the harm inflicted upon them by those of their own religion and the polytheists who ostracized and opposed them.

"And they ward off"—meaning, they repel—"with good"—meaning, with obedience—"evil"—meaning, sin; for good deeds erase evil deeds. The Prophet, may Allah exalt and grant him peace, said to Mu'adh: "Follow up an evil deed with a good one, and it will erase it."

It is also said: It means they repel harm with forbearance. Ibn Jubayr said: They repel the forbidden with the recognized (ma'ruf). Ibn Zayd said: They repel evil with good. Ibn Salam said: They repel ignorance with knowledge and rage with restraint. Ibn Mas'ud said: They repel polytheism with the testimony that there is no god but Allah.

"And they spend out of what We have provided them"—meaning, in the way of goodness, as the context of praise necessitates.
