Al-Qasas: (77) "But seek, with that which Allah has given you..."
"But seek, with that which Allah has given you" of treasures and wealth, "the home of the Hereafter," meaning: its reward. That is, the reward of Allah the Exalted therein, by spending that wealth on what serves as a means to attain it.
The preposition "in" (fi) may be adverbial, meaning: "Seek, while revolving and dealing within it [the wealth]," or it may indicate causality, meaning: "Seek that [the Hereafter] by spending what Allah has given you." It has also been recited as "Follow" (ittabi').
"And do not forget," meaning: do not abandon, like one who forgets, "your portion of the world," which is your share of it. Al-Faryabi and Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Ibn Abbas that this means: "Work in it for your Hereafter." This is also narrated from Mujahid.
Abd bin Humayd narrated from Qatadah that it means: "Take from the world what Allah has made lawful for you."
Abdullah bin Ahmad narrated in the Zawa'id al-Zuhd from Mansur, who said: "It is not the goods of the world, but your portion is your life, that you may prepare in it for your Hereafter."
Ibn al-Mundhir and a group of others narrated from al-Hasan that he said regarding this verse: "Send forth the surplus, and keep what suffices you." Malik said: "It is eating and drinking without extravagance."
It is also said that they intended by his "portion of the world" the burial shroud, as the poet said:
Your portion of all that you gather through time
Is two garments in which you are wrapped, and embalming.
In their forbidding him to forget this lies a great exhortation to provide for the Hereafter from his wealth. For whoever’s portion of his world and all that he possesses is merely a shroud, it is not fitting for him to fail to provide for his Hereafter and send forth what will benefit him there.
"And do good," to the servants of Allah the Almighty, "just as Allah has done good to you," meaning: just as He has done good in the favors He has bestowed upon you. The comparison here is in the absolute nature of doing good, or it is because of His—Glory be to Him—doing good to you, such that the particle ka (as/like) denotes causality.
It is also said: The meaning is "Do good through gratitude and obedience, just as Allah has done good to you through blessings." In this interpretation, the particle ka also admits both comparison and causality.
"And do not desire corruption in the land," a prohibition against persisting in the state he was in of oppression and tyranny.
"Indeed, Allah does not like the corrupters."
The discussion regarding this is the same as the discussion regarding His—Glory be to Him—statement: "Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant."
This entire admonition was from the believers of his people, as is apparent in the verse. It is also said that it was from Moses, peace be upon him.
