Tafsir of Al-`Ankabut 29:13

{And they will surely carry their burdens} is an explanation of the harm that their saying [to the believers, "Follow our way and we will carry your sins"] will entail for them in the Hereafter, after clarifying that it will be of no benefit to the ones they are addressing at all. Expressing sins as "burdens" is to signify their extreme weight and the fact that they are burdensome. The lam is acting as a response to an omitted oath; meaning: "And by Allah, they shall surely carry the burdens of their own selves in full."

{And other burdens} along with their burdens, which are the burdens of that which they caused by leading others astray and compelling them toward disbelief and disobedience, without there being deducted anything at all from the burdens of those whom they led astray. Abd ibn Humayd and Ibn al-Mundhir narrated from al-Hasan that the Prophet (may Allah exalt him and grant him peace) said: "Any caller who calls to guidance and is followed and acted upon, he shall have the like of the rewards of those who followed him, without that diminishing their rewards in the slightest. And any caller who calls to misguidance and is followed and acted upon, he shall have the like of the burdens of those who followed him, without that diminishing their burdens in the slightest."

Awn said: "Al-Hasan used to recite it as: 'And they will surely carry their burdens, and burdens with their burdens.'"

The choice of the phrasing in the majestic arrangement over saying "and they will carry burdens with their burdens" is to indicate the independence of their own burdens, and that these [burdens] have exhausted them and depleted their strength, and that the other burdens are merely an addition atop them.

{And they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection}—a questioning of rebuke and silencing—{about what they used to invent}, meaning what they fabricated in the world in terms of lies and falsehoods, among which is this lie of theirs.
