Al-Ankabut: (15) "So We saved him and the companions of the ship..."

"So We saved him," meaning Noah, peace be upon him, "and the companions of the ship," meaning those who boarded it with him from among his children and followers. They were eighty in number; it is also said they were seventy-eight, half male and half female. Among them were the children of Noah—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives. According to Muhammad ibn Ishaq, they were ten: five men and five women. It has been narrated in a marfu' (elevated) report that they were eight: Noah, his family, and his three sons—that is, with their wives.

"And We made it," meaning the ship, "a sign for the worlds," an admonition and a lesson for them, because it remained for a long time upon [Mount] al-Judi, where passersby could witness it due to its fame among the people. It is also possible that the pronoun refers to the event and the story understood from the preceding context, as it is a lesson for the worlds due to its renown among them.
