And We gave to Him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.

Tafsir

(Born as a son and an additional gift, at a time when he had despaired, from an elderly, barren woman).
The sentence is conjunctive to what preceded it, and there is no need to connect it to an implied verb such as "We rectified his affairs." The Glorified One did not mention Ishmael, peace be upon him. It is said: This is because the context is one of bestowing favors and mentioning beneficence, and that is realized through Isaac and Jacob, for the reasons we have alluded to, unlike the case of Ishmael. It is also said: Because mentioning him here is not appropriate, as he was tested by being separated and placed in Mecca with his mother without a companion. Al-Zamakhshari said: He, peace be upon him, was mentioned implicitly and by allusion in His saying, the Exalted: {And We placed prophethood and the Scripture in his progeny}, and he was not explicitly mentioned due to the fame of his affair and the loftiness of his status. This is despite the fact that the addressee is our Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who is among his descendants and knows more about him. "The Scripture" refers to the generic class that encompasses the four Books.
{And We gave him his reward} for what he did for Us {in the world}. Mujahid said: By saving him from the fire and from the tyrannical king, and the good praise bestowed upon him such that every nation loves him. Ibn Jurayj added to that the child who was the comfort of his eyes. It may also be added to that the continuation of prophethood in his progeny. Al-Suddi said: It is showing him, peace be upon him, his place in Paradise. Some said: It is the success in performing the deeds of the Hereafter. It is also said: It is the sending of blessings upon him until the end of time. Al-Mawardi said: It is the persistence of his hospitality at his grave, and this is not granted to any prophet other than him—though the status of some of these sayings is not hidden. Some mentioned that the intended meaning of "We gave him his reward" is in exchange for his emigration to Us. Based on this, salvation from the fire is not considered part of the reward; rather, the granting of children, good progeny, the continuation of prophethood in them, and similar things that he had, peace be upon him, after the emigration are counted as the reward.
The conjunction of this and what follows it, from His saying, the Exalted: {And indeed, in the Hereafter, he will be among the righteous}—meaning, he is surely among the ranks of those perfect in righteousness—is a case of generalization after specification. Having enumerated the religious and worldly blessings bestowed upon him, the Glorified One said: And We combined for him, along with what has been mentioned, the good of both abodes.
