Verse range: 30:31
(Turning towards Him) meaning: returning to Him, the Exalted, through repentance and sincerity of action. It is derived from naba-nawbatan wa nawban, meaning to return time after time. From this comes an-nawb (the bees), which were named as such due to their return to their hive. It has also been said: it means severed/devoted exclusively to Him, the Exalted, derived from an-nab (the canine tooth) behind the ruba'iyyah (incisor), due to the sense of isolation and distinctiveness it possesses which others do not. This has been criticized as being far-fetched, because the root of an-nab is ya’i (ending in ya), whereas this is wawi (ending in waw). Several views regarding the reason for its accusative case (nasb) were presented not long ago, and in al-Bahr [al-Muhit], an additional view was added: that it is in the accusative case as a circumstantial qualifier (hal) to "the people" in His saying, the Exalted: "the nature of the people" (fitrat an-nas), and it gave it precedence over all other views, which is—as you see—[weak]. There has also been a presentation of what was said regarding the conjunction of His saying, the Exalted:
(And fear Him) meaning: fear disobeying His command, the Exalted.
(And establish prayer and do not be of the polytheists)
(Those who altered the nature of Allah, the Glorified, with alteration) The apparent meaning is that those intended are all who associated partners with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. The prohibition is connected to the preceding commands. It is said: it is connected to "establish prayer," and the meaning is: do not be of the polytheists by abandoning it. This is the view held by Muhammad ibn Aslam at-Tusi, which is—as you see—[weak].
