Ar-Rum: 33

"And when distress touches the people..." (meaning: intensity) "...they call upon their Lord, turning in repentance to Him," (meaning: returning to Him, Exalted be He, from the supplication of others, Majestic and Mighty be He, such as idols and others). "...then when He gives them a taste of mercy from Him," (meaning: deliverance from that distress) "...at once a party of them associates partners with their Lord," (meaning: that they were calling upon, turning in repentance to Him).

"...associating partners [33]" (meaning: a party of them is suddenly overcome by polytheism, which occurs by attributing their deliverance to someone other than Him, Exalted be He, such as an idol, a star, or similar created beings).

The specification of this act to "a party of them" is because some of them are not like that. The use of the indefinite form for "distress" (durr) and "mercy" (rahmah) is for the purpose of causality, indicating that because of their lack of patience, they panic at the slightest affliction and transgress at the slightest blessing. The "then" (thumma) is used for either a high degree of contrast or a sequence in time.
