Verse range: 31:24
That is to say, we shall grant them a little enjoyment, or [let them enjoy for] a little while, for whatever ceases to exist is considered little in comparison to what is eternal.
[A punishment that is] heavy upon them, with the heaviness of dense bodies. The meaning of "compulsion" (al-idtirar)—that is, "forcing"—is to bind them to that intense torment, with the binding of one who is forced and has no power to escape what he has been driven into.
In al-Intisaf, the explanation for this compulsion is found in the Hadith which states that due to the intensity of what they endure from the Fire, they beg for cold, so the zamharir (intense freezing cold) is sent upon them, which becomes more severe for them than the flames. Thus, they wish for the return of the flames out of compulsion; it is a choice born of necessity.
The poet al-Kindi clung to the hem of this rhetoric when he said: "They see death before them and behind them, and they choose death out of necessity."
It has also been said: The meaning is that we add compression and constriction to the burning; so do not be heedless.
