Al-Ahzab: (2) "And follow what is revealed..."

"And follow what is revealed to you from your Lord" – This is a conjunction attached to what preceded it, in the category of joining the general to the specific. That is: follow, in everything you do and leave in matters of religion, that which is revealed to you of the verses, among which is this verse that commands the fear (taqwa) of Allah the Exalted and forbids obeying the disbelievers and the hypocrites. The reference to the title of Lordship (Rububiyyah) is for the purpose of emphasizing the obligation of compliance with the command.

"Indeed, Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted" – It is said: The address is directed to the Messenger, may Allah’s blessings be upon him, and the plural form is used for magnification. Abu al-Baqa’ said: It was brought in the plural form because He meant by His saying, "Follow what is revealed," [the implication of] 'follow you and your companions.' It is also said: It is for the absent ones among the disbelievers and hypocrites, by way of iltifat (shift in mode of address), but its remoteness is not hidden. Indeed, it is permissible that it refers to all [people] by way of generalization (taghlib).

Regardless, the sentence serves as a justification for the command and an emphasis on its necessity. Thus, according to the first interpretation, it is as if it were said: Indeed, Allah the Exalted knows what you do, so He guides you to that which contains your benefit; therefore, following the revelation and acting according to its requirements is mandatory.

According to the second [interpretation]: Indeed, Allah the Exalted is Acquainted with the plotting and scheming that the disbelievers and hypocrites perform, so He, Glory be to Him, commands you with that which repels it; therefore, it is necessary to follow what He, Exalted and Majestic, reveals to you.

According to the third [interpretation]: Indeed, Allah the Exalted is Acquainted with what you do and what the disbelievers and hypocrites do, so He guides you to that which contains the goodness of your state, informs you of their plotting and scheming, and commands you, Glory be to His state, with that which repels and refutes it; therefore, it is necessary to follow His revelation, the Exalted, and act according to its requirements.

Abu ‘Amr read ya‘malun (they do) with a ya (the third person), on the basis that the pronoun refers to the disbelievers and the hypocrites. It is also permitted that it be general, so do not be heedless.
