{And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and wisdom.}

"And remember" means: mention to the people by way of admonition and reminding.

It is also said: It means to study and not forget what is recited in your houses.

"Of the verses of Allah" means: the Qur'an.

"And wisdom" is the Sunnah, according to what Ibn Jarir and others recorded from Qatadah. It has been interpreted as the exhortations of the Prophet (may the blessings of Allah be upon him). From 'Ata', on the authority of Ibn Abbas, it is narrated that in the original copy of the Mushaf, the word "Sunnah" was used instead of "wisdom," as related by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Shahrastani in the beginning of his tafsir, Mafatih al-Asrar.

A group of scholars said: The intent behind "the verses and the wisdom" is the Qur'an, and this is more consistent with His (Exalted is He) saying: "recited." That is: remember what is recited of the Book, which combines being the clear verses of Allah (demonstrating the truth of Prophethood through various aspects) and being wisdom containing various sciences and laws. This is a reminder of the blessings bestowed upon them, as He made them the household of Prophethood and the landing place of revelation, and [recalls] what they witnessed of the intensity of revelation, which necessitates strength of faith and eagerness for obedience. Therein is an encouragement to refrain from what is forbidden and to carry out what they were commanded to do.

It is also said: This is a command to perfect others, following the command regarding their own perfection; from this, the reason for interjecting "Allah only intends..." in between becomes clear.

The reason for mentioning "recitation" in the houses rather than "descent" therein—despite the fact that "descent" is more appropriate for being the landing place of revelation—is because "recitation" is general to all verses, occurs in all the houses, and involves repetition, which enables them to remember and remind others, unlike "descent." It is also said that this is to respect the "wisdom," based on the view that it means the Sunnah, for it did not descend in the manner that the Qur'an descended. This is countered by the argument that it is also not "recited" in the same manner as the Qur'an. Furthermore, the reciter is not specified, so as to encompass the recitation of Gabriel, the recitation of the Prophet (upon both of them be peace), their own recitation, and the recitation of others by way of teaching and learning.

Zayd ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with both of them) read it as tutla (is recited) with a feminine 'ta'.

"Indeed, Allah is ever Subtle, Acquainted." He knows and manages what is beneficial in religion; therefore, He did what He did regarding the commands and prohibitions. Or, He knows who is fit for Prophethood and who is worthy to be of His household. It is also said: He knows wisdom, as He revealed His Book combining both descriptions. Some permitted that "the Subtle" relates to the verses due to the subtlety of their inimitability, and "the Acquainted" relates to the wisdom due to its suitability to expertise.
