Tafsir of Saba' 34:32

"Said those who were arrogant to those who were oppressed"—this is an explanatory resumption [of the narrative]. It is as if it were said: "What did they say?"

"Said those who were arrogant"—when the followers opposed them and rebuked them, it is said that they replied: "Did we turn you away from guidance after it had come to you? Nay, but you were criminals." They denied that it was they who diverted them from faith, and affirmed that it was the followers themselves who had diverted their own souls. That is: "We are not the ones who stood between you and faith after you had resolved to enter it; rather, it is you who deprived yourselves of your share [of good] through your criminality and your preference for disbelief over faith."

The occurrence of idh (when/after) as a noun to which a temporal preposition is prefixed [i.e., ba'da idh] is common in their speech, just as it is common for it to be used as a genitive construction. This falls under the category of linguistic expansion regarding adverbials, especially temporal ones. Through this, one may answer the objection raised by those who claim that idh is an adverb that must always function as an adverbial, and therefore question how it could appear here as a genitive noun [following ba'da].

The author of al-Fara'id stated that idh here has been stripped of the meaning of adverbiality, entirely shed of it, and turned into a pure noun. This is because the intent by "the time of the coming of guidance" is the guidance itself, not the time itself; therefore, it was treated as a noun to which [the preposition] is attached.
