Wa-nufikha fi al-sur (And the Horn will be blown)

This is the second blowing. Between it and the first, there are forty [years]. The use of the past tense [verb form] is to indicate the certainty of its occurrence. Al-A’raj recited al-suwar (with a fat-ha on the waw), and the discussion regarding this has already passed.

Fa-idha hum min al-ajdath (Then, suddenly, they will be from the graves)—meaning the tombs, which is the plural of jadath (with two fat-has). It was also recited with a fa instead of a tha (ajdaf), and the meaning is the same.

Ila rabbihim yansilun (Towards their Lord they will hasten)—meaning, towards the Owner of their affairs. They hasten by way of compulsion, because of His saying, Exalted is He, "They will be brought before Us [for judgment]." It has been said: The mention of the "Lord" is to indicate their haste—despite their having offended the One who was gracious to them—when they are compelled to return to Him.

There is no contradiction between this verse and His saying, "And suddenly they will be standing, looking on," because it is possible for standing, looking, and walking to occur together, or [it is possible that] the time of standing while looking and the time of hastening in their walking are very close. Ibn Abi Ishaq and Abu ‘Amr (with a differing narration from him) recited it with a damma on the sin (yansulun).
