Surah Ya seen 36:73



ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ

And for them therein are [other] benefits and drinks, so will they not be grateful?

36:73 (And for them therein are benefits)—that is, in the cattle, in both of their categories—(benefits) other than riding and eating, such as hides, wool, fur, and the like, as well as plowing with oxen.

(And drinks)—the plural of mashrab, a verbal noun acting as a passive participle, intended here as milk. It is singled out despite being included in "benefits" due to its nobility and the Arabs' special regard for it. The plural form is used to account for its various types, as there is no doubt regarding their multiplicity. Generalizing "drinks" to include butter, ghee, cheese, and dried curd is not correct unless through figurative extension or metaphorical usage, as these are not drunk; there is no need for such an interpretation since they are already included under "benefits."

It has been suggested that masharib is the plural of mashrab, meaning "the place of drinking." The Imam said: "It refers to the vessels, for from the hides are made drinking vessels such as water skins and the like." Al-Khafaji stated: "If it refers to a place, then the masharib are the vessels themselves, according to His saying, Glorified be He, 'therein,' for they are containers." Perhaps this is clearer than the statement of the Imam.

(Will they not then be grateful?)—that is, do they not witness these blessings and then fail to thank the Bestower of them, and fail to single Him out, Glorified be He, for worship?
