{وَاتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ}
(That is, bypassing Allah the Exalted, from whom they witnessed that dazzling power and manifest blessings, and they knew that He, Glory be to Him, is the One solitary in them) {آلِهَةً} (idols, and they associated them with Him, the Almighty and Majestic, in worship) {لَعَلَّهُمْ يُنصَرُونَ}

(In the hope that they might be helped, or for the purpose that they might be helped by them regarding what had befallen them and what had struck them of hardships, or [in the hope] that they might intercede for them in the Hereafter). And His, the Exalted’s, saying:
