Open in Qurani

Thus do We reward the doers of good.

  1. "Thus" is an allusion to the preservation of his beautiful renown among the nations, not to that which the preceding [verses] point toward; hence, there is no repetition. The omission of "Indeed" (inna) here is said to be an exaggeration in dispelling any illusion of its identity with what preceded. How could it be otherwise, when the former was presented as an explanation for the reward of Abraham and his son—upon them both be peace—by way of what was indicated before, while this was presented as an explanation for the reward of Abraham alone, through that which the Almighty’s saying, "And We left upon him..." and so forth, entails?

How elegant is the omission here by way of brevity, as there existed within what preceded it that which resembles this, in terms of not mentioning the son and limiting the focus to Abraham. It is also said: Perhaps this is done by way of sufficiency, having mentioned "Indeed" (inna) once in this narrative.

Some of the eminent scholars have said: [This is] to indicate that the narrative of Abraham, peace be upon him, has not reached its conclusion, for what follows, from the Almighty’s saying, "And We gave him glad tidings of Isaac," and so forth, is a completion of what pertains to him, peace be upon him—contrary to the other narratives for which "Indeed, thus do We reward the doers of good" was made the concluding segment, as what follows them does not pertain to what preceded them. Nevertheless, this narrative was not devoid of such a sentence with all its words, and this path was followed within it as a sign of special concern for it; so reflect upon this.
