"And We gave them victory, so they were the victors."

The pronoun refers to both of them along with their people; it is also said that it refers to them alone, and the plural pronoun was used to exalt them.

(So they were the victors) by virtue of that over Pharaoh and his people. As for (they), it may be treated as a pronoun of separation (fasl), an emphatic reinforcement (tawkid), or a substitute (badal).

Although the act of rescue, in terms of its existence, is concurrent with the aforementioned victory, it is—in terms of conceptual definition—an expression of being liberated from what is detested. Therefore, it was mentioned first. Then followed the victory, the meaning of which is realized simply by rescuing the aided one from his enemy without necessarily overcoming them. Finally, the triumph (being the victors) was mentioned to fulfill the right of the station of gratitude by demonstrating that each of these three ranks is a momentous blessing in its own right.
