And when they see a sign

(And when they see a sign) – meaning a miracle that indicates the truthfulness of the one who exhorts them and calls them to abandon what they are in for that which is better, or a miracle that indicates the truthfulness of the one who speaks of the Resurrection – (they mock) – meaning they exaggerate in mockery, saying it is sorcery, or some of them ask others to mock it.

It is narrated that Rukanah, a man among the polytheists of the people of Mecca, met the Messenger (may Allah grant him peace and blessings) on a desolate mountain while he was tending sheep; he was among the strongest of people. The Prophet said to him: "O Rukanah, if I throw you to the ground, will you believe in me?" He replied: "Yes." He threw him three times. Then, he presented some signs to him and called upon a tree, which came to him, yet he did not believe. He then came to Mecca and said: "O Banu Hashim, bewitch your companion with the magicians of the earth." Thus, this verse was revealed concerning him and those like him. It is also recited as (yastashirun) with an undotted 'ha' (ح), meaning they consider it sorcery.
