Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"
Tafsir
Verse range: 37:150
This is an interruption and a transition from the previous censure—which was by way of interrogation—to a censure by way of this statement. That is to say: "Nay, did We create the angels," who are among the most noble of creatures, the strongest, and the most exalted in their sanctity above natural defects, "as females?" For femininity is among the most base attributes of living beings.
This is a mockery of them and an accusation of ignorance against them, similar to the words of the Exalted: "Did they witness their creation?" For matters of this kind cannot be known except by witnessing, as there is no path to knowing them through intellect. Since their negation is beyond doubt, the one who asserts their femininity must have been present at the time of their creation. The sentence is either a circumstantial clause (hal) relating to the agent of "We created"—meaning, "Nay, did We create them as females while they were present at that time?"—or it is a conjunction connected to "We created," meaning, "Nay, or are they witnesses?"
