And indeed, the disbelievers used to say,

*Wa-in kānu layaqūlūna* (167)
"And indeed, they used to say..."
In (إن) is the lightened form [of inna], and the lam (اللام) is the differentiator (al-fāriqah). The pronoun refers to the disbelievers of Quraysh; they used to say [this] before the mission of the Prophet, may Allah exalt him and grant him peace.
