As-Saffat: (50) "Then they will approach one another, questioning."

(And they will approach one another, questioning).

This is grammatically conjoined to "(They will be served)" (yutafu), while the intervening text is a parenthetical clause; or it may be linked to the first [implicit] predicate—that is, "they will drink," and upon drinking, they will converse, as is the habit of those gathered for a drink.

Muhammad ibn Fayyad said: "Nothing remains of pleasures except the conversation of noble people over a drink, and the kissing of the cheeks of a radiant moon that wanders with the luster of the water of youth."

The past tense is used here even though the verb it is conjoined to is in the present tense, to signify the importance of this conjoined action relative to the one it is conjoined to. How could they not turn to conversation when it is the greatest of the pleasures they engage in? Furthermore, it indicates that its occurrence is inevitable. Their questioning concerns knowledge, virtues, and what transpired for them and against them in the worldly life. How sweet it is to remember what has passed when in a state of luxury and peace of mind.
