Tafsir
Verse range: 37:86
(Do you desire gods other than Allah falsely?)
That is: Do you desire gods other than Allah, the Exalted, ifkan (falsely), meaning for the sake of a lie? The object (alihatan) is brought forward before the verb (turidun) for the sake of emphasis ('inaya), because the denial of this act or the establishing of it is the intended purpose, and there is also the observance of the rhythmic ending (fasilah). The object for which (ifkan) follows because what is most important is to confront them with the fact that they are upon falsehood and vanity in their polytheism.
It is also permissible for ifkan to be the direct object, meaning: "Do you desire a lie?" and for alihatan (gods) to be a substitute for it—a total substitution (badal kull min kull)—rendering them as the very essence of a lie by way of hyperbole. Or, the speech is based on the omission of a genitive, meaning: "the worship of gods," for that is a diversion of worship from its proper orientation.
It has also been suggested that it is a circumstantial qualifier (hal) derived from the pronoun in turidun (you all), meaning "you all being liars"; or that it is an object meaning "falsified" (ma'fukah). This has been critiqued by the observation that using a verbal noun (masdar) as a circumstantial qualifier is not consistent, except in specific constructions such as amma (as for), for example: "As for knowledge, he is a scholar."
