Tafsir of As-Saffat 37:94

(Then they turned towards him) that is, towards Ibrahim, peace be upon him, after they returned from their festival and inquired about the breaker [of the idols], and after their statement, "Bring him before the eyes of the people."

(Yaziffūn) is a circumstantial state (ḥāl) from the wāw in aqbalū, meaning they were hastening. It is derived from the ostrich's zaff, which is its quickening of pace by mixing flying with walking. Its verbal noun is zaff and zafīf. It is also said that (yaziffūn) means they were walking with composure and deliberation, derived from the zifāf (procession) of the bride, as they were secure in the belief that no harm would come to their idols due to their supposed greatness, though there was no such thing.

Hamza, Mujahid, Ibn Wathab, and al-A‘mash read it as (yuziffūn) with a ḍamma on the yā’, from azaffa, meaning to enter into zafīf. In this case, the hamza is not for transitivity or for compelling another to hasten; rather, it is part of the root, as al-Asma‘i stated.

Mujahid, Abdullah bin Yazid, al-Dahhak, Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri’, and Ibn Abi ‘Abla also read it as (yaziffūn), the imperfect tense of wazzafa, meaning to hasten. Al-Kisa'i and al-Farra' said: "We do not recognize the form wazzafa in the sense of zaffa," but since reliable authorities have affirmed it, their lack of knowledge does not invalidate it.

It has also been recited in the passive voice (yuzzaffūn), and it has been recited with a quiescent zāy (yazfūn) from zafāhu, meaning to drive or urge someone along, as if they were urging one another forward due to their eagerness to reach him.
