Verse range: 38:37

Open in Qurani

38. And the devils, every builder and diver.

"And the devils" is a conjunction linked to "the wind."

"Every builder and diver" is a substitute (badal) for "the devils." It is a 'substitute of the whole for the whole' (badal kull min kull) if those who are known and subjected are intended, or if those who possess the strength for building and diving and the capability for both are intended.

Or, it is a 'substitute of a part' (badal ba'd) if that is not intended; thus, a pronoun is implied, meaning: "some of them."

"The diver" refers to diving to extract ornaments. He—peace be upon him—was, according to what has been said, the first to extract pearls.
