Verse range: 38:4

Open in Qurani

(And they wondered that there has come to them a warner from among themselves)

This is a narration of their falsehoods, which branch out from what has been previously mentioned regarding their arrogance and dissension. That is, they wondered that a messenger came to them from their own kind—meaning a human being—or from their own circle, and they are known for being unlettered; thus, the meaning is "an unlettered messenger." The intent is that they deemed this an astonishing matter, beyond the possibility of occurrence, and they denied it with the utmost severity—not that they believed it had occurred and then marveled at it.

(And the disbelievers said)

The apparent noun is used here in place of the pronoun to express anger toward them, to condemn them, and to signal that no one would dare to utter such things except those deeply entrenched in disbelief and defiance.

(This is a magician)

In regards to what he manifests that we cannot produce a likeness of.

(a liar)

In regards to what he attributes to Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, of being sent [as a messenger] and the revelation [of the Scripture].
