"They said" (meaning the followers as well, and Ibn al-Sa'ib’s statement that the speaker is all the people of Hell is highly contrary to the apparent meaning and should not be resorted to. The verb was placed between their two statements due to the contrast between them in essence and address): i.e., they said, turning away from the dispute with their leaders and beseeching Allah—the Almighty and Majestic—"Our Lord, whoever brought this upon us, increase him in punishment twofold in the Fire."
(Meaning: doubled. Its meaning is "possessing a fold," that is, an equivalent and an addition; he adds to his punishment its like, so through that addition, it becomes twice the punishment of another. "Dhunf" (the fold/double) is also applied to absolute increase. Ibn Mas’ud said here: "The double consists of snakes and scorpions." The apparent meaning from some of their expressions is that "man" (whoever) is relative. al-Khafaji insisted that it is conditional. In al-Bahr, "whoever brought" refers to the leaders. al-Dahhak said: It is Iblis and Cain, and this is more appropriate, contrary to the apparent meaning narrated from Ibn al-Sa'ib).
