(He said, "My Lord, respite me") i.e., grant me a delay and postpone my death. The particle fa (so) is connected to an implied expression that the context necessitates, as if he said: "Since You have made me accursed, then respite me and do not cause me to die (until the day they are resurrected)."

(i.e., Adam and his descendants for requital after death, which is the time of the second blowing of the Trumpet). By this, the accursed one intended to find an opportunity to lead them astray, to take his revenge upon them, and to escape death, for there is no death after the Resurrection. The matter of the Resurrection was known among the angels, and he heard it from them, so he said what he said. It is also possible that he knew it through reason, having learned through certain signs or another means of knowledge that the individuals of this species are not free from committing injustice among themselves, that this abode is not an abode of permanence, that death within it is inevitable, and that wisdom necessitates requital.
