Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."

Or [lest] it say, "If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."
Tafsir
Verse range: 39:57
(Or that you say: If only Allah the Exalted had guided me, I would have been among the righteous)
Meaning: among those who refrain from polytheism and acts of disobedience. More than one [scholar] has interpreted "guidance" here as the instruction and indication that leads [to the goal], based on the fact that this is most appropriate for a conditional statement and corresponds to the refutation in His statement—glory be to Him—: "(Yes, indeed...)" and so on. Abu Hayyan interpreted it as the creation of [the capacity for] receiving guidance. Regardless, the apparent meaning is that this statement [will be uttered] in the Hereafter.
