ﲯ ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ ﲹ ﲺ ﲻ ﲼ ﲽ
And [for] their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of the people's wealth unjustly. And we have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
Tafsir
Verse range: 4:161
(And their taking of usury, while they had been forbidden from it) The phrase "while they had been forbidden from it" (wa qad nuhu 'anhu) is a circumstantial clause (hal). The verse contains evidence that usury was forbidden to them just as it is forbidden to us, and that prohibition indicates the unlawfulness of the thing prohibited; otherwise, the Glorified would not have threatened punishment for violating it.
(And their consuming the wealth of the people unjustly) Through bribery and all other unlawful means.
(And We have prepared for the disbelievers among them) Meaning, for those who persisted in disbelief, not for those among them who repented and believed, such as Abdullah ibn Salam and his likes.
(A painful punishment) Which they shall taste in the Hereafter, just as they tasted the punishment of prohibition in this world. It is mentioned in al-Bahr that the prohibition was general, applying to the wrongdoer and others, and that it falls under the category of: "And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively." Thus, the Glorified said: "for the disbelievers [among them]" rather than "for them." Al-Juba'i also held this view, so reflect upon it.
