And as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards and grant them extra from His bounty. But as for those who disdained and were arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or helper.
Tafsir
Verse range: 4:173
His saying, Exalted is He, "As for those who believed and performed righteous deeds, He will pay them in full their rewards," and what follows is a detailing of the recompense, as if it were said: "And whoever disdains His worship will be tormented with regret when he sees the rewards of the worlds, and by what will afflict him of the punishment of Allah, Exalted is He." Thus, the pronoun refers to those who disdain and are arrogant, and none other, with the wording and meaning of "whoever" (man) being observed.
The Allamah al-Taftazani critiqued this, stating that it is not sound because "as for" (amma) enters upon the two groups, not the two divisions of the recompense. This group is presented under the title of belief and righteous deeds, not under the attribute of not disdaining, which would be appropriate for what precedes and follows it, so as to alert [the reader] that it is what causes the fruits that follow it. The meaning of paying them their rewards in full is to give them [what is due] without diminishing anything from it at all. It has been recited as fayuhsharuhum (He will gather them) with a kasra on the sheen, which is a dialect. It has also been recited as fasanuhshuruhum (We will gather them) with the nun of grandeur, in which there is a shift (iltifat).
"And He will increase them from His bounty": by multiplying their rewards many times over, and by giving them what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never occurred to the heart of a human. Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Tabarani, Ibn Mardawayh, Abu Nu'aym in al-Hilyah, and al-Isma'ili in his Mu'jam recorded with a weak chain of transmission from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "He will pay them their rewards in full" means He will enter them into Paradise, "and increase them from His bounty" means [granting them] intercession for those who were destined for the Fire among those to whom they had shown kindness in the world.
"As for those who disdained" the worship of Allah, Exalted is He, "and were arrogant" toward it, "He will punish them" because of that "with a painful punishment" which description cannot encompass. "And they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector" to manage their affairs and arrange their interests, "nor a helper" to support them against the might of Allah, Exalted is He, or to save them from His punishment, Glorified is He.
