Tafsir of An-Nisa' 4:55

(So among them) means: from the kind of these envious ones and their forefathers, (is he who believed in it), meaning: in what the family of Abraham was given. (And among them is he who averted from it), meaning: turned away from it and did not believe in it.

In one opinion, this is a narration of what emanated from their ancestors following the occurrence of that which is narrated, without it having any role in the [legal] obligation.

It is said: It has a role in that by demonstrating that if envy were not ugly, their ancestors would have unanimously agreed upon it, so not one of them would have believed, just as they unanimously agreed upon it; thus, not one of them would have believed—but this is baseless.

It is also said: Its meaning is, "Among the family of Abraham are those who believed in it, and among them are those who disbelieved, and there was no weakening of his [Abraham's] affair in that; likewise, the disbelief of these [people] does not weaken your affair." Thus, the pronouns in (in it) and (from it) in this interpretation refer to Abraham. In this is consolation for him, peace and blessings be upon him.

The attribution of the two pronouns to Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him peace, and making the speech derivative of His saying—the Exalted—("O you who were given the Book") or His saying—the Glorified—("Have you not seen those who..."), etc., is extremely far-fetched. Likewise is making the two pronouns refer to what was mentioned regarding the narrative of the family of Abraham.

(And sufficient is Hell as a blazing fire), meaning: a fire stoked and ignited with intense ignition. This means: even if some of the punishment in this world has been averted from them, sufficient for them is what has been prepared for them of the blazing fire of Hell in the Hereafter.
