Tafsir
Verse range: 40:33
(The Day you turn your backs in retreat) is an appositive (badal) for "The Day of Calling Out" (Yawm al-Tanad), meaning: the day you turn away from the assembly point, departing from it toward the Fire. It has been said: [it means] fleeing from the Fire. It is narrated that when they hear the roaring of the Fire, they flee, but they reach no region of the regions without finding angels in rows; thus, fleeing does not benefit them. This view is considered more favorable because it is more complete in its benefit and shows a clearer connection to His saying, the Exalted: (You have no protector against Allah)—meaning: [no one] to protect you in your flight so that you are not punished in the Fire. This was stated by al-Suddi. Qatadah said: It means you have no preventer to stop you from entering the Fire, nor a helper. This is said according to the first meaning of "the day you turn your backs in retreat." Regardless of the interpretation, the clause is another circumstantial qualifier (hal) from the pronoun in (you turn).
(And whoever Allah leads astray, there is no guide for him)
[He cannot be] guided to the path of salvation at all. It is as if the man [the believer from the family of Pharaoh] despaired of them accepting his advice, so he said that. Then he rebuked them for denying the previous messengers, saying:
