Tafsir
Verse range: 40:76
"(Enter the gates of Hell)"—that is, the gates allocated for you—"(abiding therein)"—destined for eternity therein—"(for evil is the dwelling of the arrogant)."
Regarding the phrase "(for evil is the dwelling of the arrogant)," the requirements of the majestic arrangement, since it began with "Enter," would have dictated that it be said: "For evil is the entrance of the arrogant," so that the beginning and the end would correspond. However, since the entry, restricted by eternity, is the cause of the dwelling, the word "dwelling" (mathwa) was used, and thus the correspondence is sound in meaning.
This command, according to what is favored in al-Bahr, is said to them after the preceding dialogue, while they are already in the Fire, and the focus of the statement is the eternity; thus, it is a command with the restriction of eternity, not of absolute entry. It is also permissible to say: after they have entered it, they are commanded to enter the gates allocated to them, so it is a command for entry with the restriction of distribution to each respective gate.
Ibn Atiyyah said: It is said to them, prior to this dialogue, at the very beginning of the matter: "Enter."
