Introduction

It is Meccan, as narrated from Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Atiyyah reported the consensus of the scholars upon that, and no exception has been transmitted. Muqatil said: Except for the words of the Exalted, "And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you," for it was revealed in Jerusalem. This is mentioned in Majma' al-Bayan, and in al-Itqan, it was revealed in the heavens; it is also said: in Medina. Its number of verses is eighty-eight according to the Syrian count, and eighty-nine in others. The aspect of the appropriateness of its opening to what preceded it is apparent.

Ḥā-Mīm

The discussion concerning this is in the same manner as what has previously passed in the opening of [Surah] Yā-Sīn.
