Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.

Tafsir

(He is not but) i.e., Jesus, son of Mary, (a servant upon whom We have bestowed favor) with prophethood and its concomitants. Thus, he is of elevated status and rank, yet he has no share in the entitlement of divinity. This is a wise statement comprising that which is comprised in the words of the Exalted: "Indeed, those for whom the best has preceded..." It is, however, by way of allusion and [a refutation] of the corrupt view of the Christians in their preference for worshipping him, peace be upon him, and an insinuation regarding the place of the Quraysh’s worship of others besides Him, the Exalted and Almighty.
And His saying, the Exalted: (And We made him an example) i.e., a wondrous matter, worthy that his mention should spread like proverbial sayings (for the Children of Israel) in that We created him without a father and granted him—in the reviving of the dead, the healing of the blind and the leper, and the like—that which We did not grant to anyone else in his time. This is a statement in which is contained the aspect of being a trial through him, the aspect of its indication of the power of his Creator, exalted is His majesty, and the aspect of his, peace be upon him, being far removed from that which is falsely attributed to him in terms of excess and deficiency.
