"And We did not wrong them, but they were the ones who were the wrongdoers."

  1. This is due to their evil choice. The word hum (they) is a damir fasl (pronoun of separation), which serves the purpose of specialization (exclusivity).

Abdullah and Abu Zaid read it as az-zalimun (the wrongdoers) in the nominative case, based on the understanding that hum is a subject (mubtada) and the word following it is its predicate (khabar).

Abu Amr al-Jarmi stated that the dialect of Tamim treats what is considered a fasl by others as a subject, and they put the word following it in the nominative case as a predicate. Abu Zaid said: I heard them reciting: "tajiduhu 'inda Allahi huwa khayrun wa a'zam" (you will find it with Allah—it is better and greater), with khayrun and a'zam in the nominative case. Qays ibn Dharih also said:

"You yearn for Layla when you have abandoned her, And you were, when at the open plain, the one most capable."

Sibawayh said: It reached us that Ru'bah used to say, "I think Zayd is better (huwa khayrun) than you," meaning it in the nominative case.
